Community Connect 360 Inclusion Celebration: National Hispanic Heritage Month
A monthly celebration of the diversity of the LCTA community
National Hispanic Heritage Month, which begins each year on September 15th, celebrates U.S. Latinos, their culture and their history. Started in 1968 by Congress as Hispanic Heritage Week, it was expanded to a month in 1988. The 15th was selected because it marks the independence days of five Latin American countries - Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
Did you know that U.S. Hispanics or Latinos can be of any race, any ancestry, or any country of origin? Hispanic refers to a person who is from, or a descendant of someone who is from, a Spanish-speaking country. Latino/a or Latinx refers to a person who is from, or a descendant of someone who is from, a country in Latin America.
Learn more about how you can celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month in Alexandria here, including a Hispanic Heritage Fiesta at the Beatley Library on September 25th. And what better way to celebrate with children the diverse cultures and families that are a part of the LCTA school community than with books? This informative and inspiring Hispanic heritage book list was compiled last year by LCTA staff, and many of the titles are accessible via YouTube.
